A Few Of The Basic Hardware Needs You Might Come Across With Virtual Server Hosting
The minimum network and hardware requirements associated with a Windows VPS differ based on a multitude of factors, such as the server's intended use and the load it will bear. However despite different virtualization platforms having different minimum requirements, there are several general factors they share.
The requirements will for example involve certain types of processors that have certain minimum processing speeds, such as a 1.0 GHz Itanium processor. The number of cores a processor has, its clock frequency and its cache size all affect how it will perform.
You'll need a DVD drive for doing disk installation, some kind of pointing device, for example a mouse, as well as a keyboard. Every virtual server needs some kind of operating system. If you're making use of a UK VPS hosting company, they can advise you on your choice of operating system so that it fulfils your requirements. The display will need to be set at a minimum pixel resolution, for example Super VGA 800 x 600 pixel resolution.
Internet software will be needed by the UK VPS, for example Microsoft Internet Explorer 6 Service Pack 1 as a minimum requirement. The minimum disk space a virtual server will require will depend on what the virtual server will be used for. Formatting of the disk partitions will need to follow certain file systems. The networks on virtual servers require some type of security, for example a firewall that can be configured according to specific virtual server user requirements.
Different virtualization platforms have different minimum RAM requirements, though they will also specify a recommended amount according to the intended use of the virtual server. As more installations are placed on virtual servers they will require more RAM to ensure they run properly.
A virtual server requires monitoring of its hardware and network to make sure that it is running optimally. A good UK VPS hosting company will provide round-the-clock technical support to ensure any problems experienced by the virtual servers they host are resolved as soon as possible so that uptime is maximised.
The benefits of using a UK VPS provider are that they can guarantee your minimum requirements. For example a UK VPS provider can guarantee a particular amount of CPU resources, disk space and RAM as determined by you according to your minimum virtual server needs. All you need to do is choose a package that meets your needs or the provider can custom-build a virtual server according to your specifications. The VPS provider can upgrade your minimum requirements as and when needed, such as during periods when your business website receives peak levels of traffic.
The discussion above highlights just a few of the potential minimum requirements you will encounter with a virtual server and it is important to remember that virtual servers that vary in their intended uses will also vary in their minimum requirements.
What does "thread" specifically mean in computing terms?
Yes, I was wondering what does thread specifically mean in computing terms?
How does this affect your system and how does this affect your CPUs? (Based on dual, quad, octo, cores, ect)
Also how would you know how much thread a program uses?
I'm a little confuse about what thread really is so please clarify it for me.
Thanks!!
A thread is a path of execution. In it's simplest form think of it as a simple program that executes a loop. The more of these that you can run, in parallel, the more work can be done.
In classic single core processors this is accomplished by suspending one thread to let another run. Called time slicing where every thread running gets it's own portion of total CPU time. With only a single CPU or core you are limited to what that one processor can do.
Multi-core processors now allow these threads to run on separate cores. So, you can get the same number of threads running at the same time but now you can do that on more than one core.
So, dual means twice as many, quad four times, etc.
If you equate a thread to a program (say like watching a video), you can have one instance of the video running for every thread that can be run.
A little simplistic but hopefully gives you an idea. Actually a single video requires several threads on it's own.
Intel releases Core i7-3820 CPU, proves Sandy Bridge E isn't entirely elitist (Engadget)
The cost of entry to the LGA-2011 party just tumbled by around $250 thanks to
Chipzilla's Core i7-3820 processor. It's a proper Sandy Bridge E processor
with PCIe 3.0 support and more PCIe lanes, more memory bandwidth and room for
more RAM compared to older platforms, but of course it's also lower specced
than the pricey 3960X and 3930K. It 'only' has four cores (and eight threads),
10MB of L3 cache and it isn't fully unlocked -- as denoted by the lack of a K
or an X in its title. Priced at around $300, it looks like a steal when
stacked up against an LGA-1155 cousin like the $332 Core i7-2700K, which has
the same 3.9GHz base clock speed, 8MB of L3 cache and none of the added
benefits of Sandy Bridge E. However, once you factor in the cost of an X79
motherboard and perhaps also a new cooling solution, Intel's pricing starts to
make more sense. _AnandTech_ reviewed and benchmarked this chip a while back
and reached a glowing conclusion -- check it out at the More Coverage link
below.
