Notebooks Or Netbooks: Which Should I Buy?

Nowadays, life without a computer is unimaginable, particularly for undergraduates such as myself. Aside from semi-monthly case studies, my very demanding coursework entails having to do several write-ups everyday. Aside from typing these assignments, I also use my five year old laptop for researching online and emailing. Although extremely helpful, my laptop which tips the scale at three kilos not to mention takes up most of the space in my backpack can be such a pain to carry around the entire day. For this reason, I searched for a system that has the functionalities I need but is less bulky.

Most of the laptops, the reliable ones anyway, are priced around $700. Since I am living independently, I didn’t want to purchase something too expensive. So I did a search online for budget laptops, and that was when I stumbled upon cheap netbooks. From what I read, notebooks and cheap netbooks are alike in that they are both portable computing devices. They are essentially dissimilar in terms of size and weight. Almost all notebook computers weigh around two to three kilos; netbooks on the other hand weigh around 1.5 kilos. Notebooks boast of 15-18 inch monitors. Netbooks on the other hand sport screens that are usually 9-11 inches diagonally.

Because netbooks are very portable, I knew there would be some tradeoffs. Their processor chips would certainly pale in comparison to those found on notebooks being that these aren't typically capable of handling games and photo or video editors comfortably. At the same time, netbook computers don’t have built-in DVD drives. I was willing to overlook these restrictions mainly because I only needed one that will allow me to connect to the World Wide Web, e-mail, and make documents, presentations, and spreadsheets.

There are already plenty of cheap netbooks for sale online and in the malls. Practically all netbook computers can connect to the Internet wirelessly, and Bluetooth and cameras have become standard features as well. Majority of those sold today come with a minimum of 160 Gigabytes of hard drive space and 1 Megabyte of Random access memory, and come pre-installed with a Windows, Linux, or Android OS. The majority of cheap netbooks for sale these days come with an Intel Atom chipset.

I chose to purchase online since the prices of netbooks there were much lower compared to those in the malls. I compared several netbook reviews prior to the purchase, and even went to the local mall to try some of them. At three hundred fifty dollars, my new feature-rich netbook computer was a very good purchase. Aside from being very portable, it is also quite an eye candy.
